Meet Student Ambassador: Cass

We talked to student ambassador Cass about living in Northland and studying at Whangarei Girls High School. Cass moved to New Zealand from the Phillipines 7 years ago with her family.

Why do you love Northland?

I have lived in Northland since I moved here almost 7 year ago, and I consider Northland as my second home. I fell in love with Northland because of the scenery when you’re driving to places. I love Northland because of the small community and the friendliness of people. I love Northland the most during summer because there’s so many beaches around Northland and they’re only like 20 mins drive away. I also love Northland because it’s not a very busy city and there’s not much traffic happening. I have met the most amazing and kindest friends who became family. I am not ashamed to call Northland my second home.

What do you love most about studying at school in New Zealand?

What I love the most about studying in Northland is the opportunities they have for young students. I have been to a lot of schools and I would say WGHS is the best school for me. They are very welcoming and teachers are very understanding and supportive. The students have also been very nice. They’re also very understanding about my culture and how my English still isn’t as good as it’s my second language.

What are your favourite experiences and places to go in Northland?

My favourite things to do in Northland would be going on unexpected beach trips with my family or my cousins because I like seeing the beaches that Northland offers . One of the best memories I love is just walking around Whangarei CBD with my family and my friends. I love doing this with them as I get to see the city and the local people in Northland.

What are your interests, sports, and hobbies?

My interests are baking and cooking, especially trying out new recipes and helping my mum with her business in food. Another hobby of mine is binge watching K-dramas with my sister on days when I’m not doing school work or busy babysitting my younger siblings. I also play hockey. I’ve only been playing since 2017 but I love it and wouldn’t change it for anything. Some sports I’ve played in the past include swimming when I was in the Philippines and badminton and volleyball when I first came to New Zealand.

What is your favourite local place to hang out with friends?

My favourite local places to hang out with my friends are the parks where me and my friends can have picnics and just chat and chill with them. Local cafes and restaurants are also another place where me and my friends eat and enjoy each other’s company, but nothing can beat the beach. So every summer we go on unexpected beach trips to either Matapouri or Kai Iwi Lakes
