Ambassador Profile: Mark Francis Marasigan

Mark is from United Arab Emrates and is studying at Kamo High School while living with a host family in Whangarei. He is one of our 2020 Study Northland Student Ambassadors.

What made you choose Northland?

I chose to study in Northland because of its strong Maori cultural ties which i think is unique and exciting, being able to go to Waitangi and know that it is a place of importance historically. Northland’s laid-back lifestyle and the weather here, and its friendly community who are heartwarming and very welcoming.

What do you love most about studying at school in New Zealand?

One thing i loved the most about studying in New Zealand are the friendly and fun people who make up the school, without them then studying in New Zealand wouldn’t be memorable. Since teachers here really care about the students learning experience, they will always help you. And the fact that as a student, we are encouraged to work as a group with those around us and its really intriguing, you get to listen to other students opinions, share your opinions and develop your independent thinking which is a crucial skill in life. After a month here, i got to enjoy interacting with other students and teachers as well who I really cherish as wonderful people.

What are your favourite experiences in Northland?

Being in New Zealand is already a unique experience in itself, but one of the most memorable experiences are being able to meet people from around the world from New Zealand, Japan, Europe, America, and learn about their culture, food, and language, which is so intriguing. Another experience I love as a student is attending outdoor education. At Mt Parihaka in Whangarei, as you reach the top, imagine the blue skies with the clouds above you form elegantly, the wind blowing through your skin and the astounding view of Kamo that I could still remember to this day. And being able to tramp, kayak, and all the thrilling adventures that could only be found here in Northland!

What is like living with a homestay family?

I remembered when i first arrived in New Zealand, I was so stoked to meet my host family. When i first met them, they were so kind and caring as they took me on a trip around Whangarei and went to a beach (which was absolutely stunning!!), and their farm which was a cool experience. They always helped me with my English whenever I couldn’t say my opinion in a sentence, and showing me the ‘Kiwi’ experience!!

What are your interests, sports  and hobbies?

Some of my favourite sports is playing badminton, table tennis, and volleyball. I also enjoy reading books and listening to music, as well as digital arts such as painting a character digitally, or photoshop.
