Kerikeri High School is a warm hearted, innovative, co-educational secondary school set on expansive grounds within walking distance to Kerikeri town centre. We are known for high academic performance and for producing students strong in the four cornerstones of a balanced education: Academic, Cultural, Sporting and Leadership & Service.

Kerikeri is in the Bay of Islands, in the north of New Zealand.  It’s a 45-minute domestic flight from Auckland Airport or a 4-hour journey by car.  Kerikeri has a population of around 10,000 and is known for its outdoor lifestyle with access to lots of beaches and coastline for sailing, surfing, kayaking, scuba diving and swimming as well as native forest with great walks and picturesque waterfalls. The town has two sports complexes and several fitness centres. 

Academic Plus Programmes

International students enrolled in Kerikeri High School’s Academic Plus Programmes have the chance to learn typical kiwi adventure activities including sailing, surfing and equestrian. They study regular classes at school from Monday to Thursday, then on Fridays they go out and participate in their chosen activity.  Training is with world-class coaches making the most of the diverse and exciting Bay of Islands playground. Kerikeri High School Unique Features and Programmes

Educational Highlights:

The academic opportunities for students at Kerikeri High School include achievement in the National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) and in addition, competitions such as the Top Energy Science and Technology Fair, Australasian ICAS and other Academic competitions, Mathex and Future and Community Problem Solving competitions. Kerikeri High School students’ NCEA results are consistently higher than the New Zealand national average.

Cultural Highlights:

Students can take part in Drama, Public Speaking and Debating.  Our music groups include our Jazz Band, Junior Jazz Band, Concert Band, Choir and Rock groups.  The Kapa Haka group practices and performs regularly and our international students are warmly welcomed to join the group.

Sporting Highlights

The sports offered at Kerikeri High School include Adventure Racing, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Cricket, Cross Country, Croquet, Equestrian, Football, Futsal, Golf, Hockey, Mountain Biking, Netball, Rugby, Softball, Surfing, Swimming, Tennis, Table Tennis, Triathlon, Volleyball and Yachting.  We place a great emphasis on sporting opportunities to build student confidence and self-esteem, to teach respect for others and to develop skills and abilities.  This is reflected in the enthusiastic participation of students across a very wide range of sports and activities.

Special Features

Our International Department team are warm and caring.  We have an “open door” policy and offer 24/7 support to our international students.  All students take an English test on arrival and are placed into either Level 1, 2 or 3 ESOL or mainstream English.  English language support is offered across the curriculum as needed.

Set on 21acres Kerikeri High School has modern learning environments with welcoming classrooms, an Auditorium, a large vibrant Library, Gymnasium, and the use of a swimming complex which includes a diving pool.  We have a huge range of specialist facilities, a modern Performing Arts Complex, including Music facilities and a high-tech Technology and Arts Complex.  Other facilities include our Whare Hui, and extensive playing fields and gardens.  Kerikeri High School offers computer access for students including specialist information technology classrooms and learning commons, as well as a state-of-the-art School-wide Wi-Fi Network.

Accommodation

International students at Kerikeri High School live with local host families during their stay in Kerikeri.  There are a variety of homestay options which include host families located within walking distance to the school and the shops or rural families which might include living on a farm where there are horses and other animals.  Most families in Kerikeri have domestic pets such as dogs or cats.  Our host families are carefully selected, and many will have hosted other international students, all members in the host family over 18 years old are police vetted.
